Root canals and endodontics
Keep the tooth. Lose the pain.
When the nerve inside a tooth is infected or damaged, a root canal removes it, cleans the canals and seals the tooth so it can be kept.

About this service
A tooth that aches deeply, throbs at night, or is painful to bite on often has an infected nerve. Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, disinfects the inside of the tooth and seals it. The tooth is then usually protected with a crown.
We also evaluate and retreat root canals done elsewhere, and perform apicoectomy and apexogenesis when a case calls for them.
If you have had a root canal before and the tooth is troubling you again, we can evaluate whether it is infected and, depending on the case, retreat it. For infections at the tip of the root that do not resolve, an apicoectomy removes the root tip surgically. For young patients whose roots are still forming, apexogenesis helps the root finish developing.
Who it may be appropriate for
- Anyone with deep, lingering or throbbing tooth pain
- Patients with a tooth that is sensitive to heat or painful to bite on
- People with a previous root canal that has become painful or infected
- Children and teenagers with an injured tooth whose root is still developing
A guide, not a diagnosis. Only an exam can confirm what is right for you.
What it gives you.
01
The tooth is kept
A treated tooth can last for many years, which is almost always better than removing it.
02
The pain stops
Removing the infected nerve removes the source of the ache.
03
Retreatment available
Previous root canals can be evaluated and retreated depending on the case.

Numbing
The tooth is fully anaesthetised. The procedure itself should feel like a long filling.
- 03
Cleaning and sealing
The canals are cleaned, shaped and sealed, usually in one or two visits.

Frequently asked.
The treatment is done under local anaesthetic and most people find it no worse than a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the infection beforehand, which the treatment removes.
